Montepepe Winery

Montepepe is a winery that was founded in 2000, the year in which the Poggi family took over an ancient property of 25 hectares that belonged to the French royal house of Bourbon in the Municipality of Montignoso (MS).
The wine area is located in part of the DOC Candia dei Colli Apuani. The name ‟ MONTEPEPE” belongs to the hill of the same name that overlaps with the property.
This is the first hill about 5 km from the coast of Versilia with a full southern exposure, on which the mid-range zone has been cultivated with vines since 1800, a time when Alexandre De Gères - Bordeaux winemaker employed by Carlo Ludovico di Borbone (Duke di Lucca) - implemented the terraced vineyard in stone as we can still see it today.
In 2002, along with the advice of Federico Curtaz (former agronomist of Angelo Gaja), the restoration of the ancient vineyard began.
What makes this terroir unique, above all, is the soil made of metamorphic rocks and with a decisively acidic component.
The restoration is carried out without changing the morphology of the site while fully restoring the stone terraces and the original soil. The vines are made up of whites like Vermentino and Viogner and reds such as Syrah and Massaretta.
The wines that are produced have been distinguished since the first productions for their personality and high quality. In 2014, the prestigious Guida Espresso attributed a vote of excellence to the 2013 Montepepe Bianco and in 2018 Veronelli awarded the Montepepe Bianco Vintage the prize for Best Italian White Wine.
For several years now in the Slow Wine guide, MONTEPEPE BIANCO has been named a ‟GREAT WINE” alongside the most famous Italian wines and the only “Great White Wine” in Tuscany. DEGERES 2016, the vintage currently on sale, was named one of the 100 best wines in Italy for the guide L’ESPRESSO 2020.
